Vision 2020: Changing the Story of Northeast Indiana
The percentage of per capita income in Northeast Indiana has been on the decline for nearly 40 years. In fact, in 2009, Northeast Indiana fell to 79.5% of the national average. This is a distressing economic trend that needs to be addressed, and the time to act is now.
As a result, the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership and its many partners decided to take action, establishing a regional initiative called Vision 2020. Vision 2020 is designed to unify the region around a common mission, vision and set of priorities, so that by working together, we can write a new story for a future of success in Northeast Indiana.
What is Vision 2020?
Vision 2020 is not about identifying low-hanging fruit. It’s about finding and implementing game-changing tactics. Game-changing tactics aren’t easy and they take time.
It all began with a six-month visioning process in 2010 that collected input from over 1,000 individuals from the 10-county region about their thoughts on the future of Northeast Indiana. As a result of these meetings and the benchmarking of successful regions across the country, it was determined that Northeast Indiana would focus on five key areas that had the capability of producing the most significant economic impact on the region. Those key focus areas became The Five Pillars of Vision 2020: 21st Century Talent, Competitive Business Climate, Entrepreneurship, Infrastructure and Quality of Life.
The Regional Opportunities Council has been charged with providing leadership for the initiative and championing strategies for each of the five pillars and, while staff support is provided by the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership. Even with the involvement of both of these regional groups, the success of Vision 2020 is ultimately dependent on the regional engagement, alignment and support of the organizations, businesses and individuals of Northeast Indiana.
While there are multiple pillars and strategies, there is one collective goal—to turn Northeast Indiana’s declining per capita income around and create a globally competitive region.
